If you would like to call another iOS device from your Mac, however, note that iOS 4.1 is required for a successful connection.

If you try to call a device with iOS 4.01 installed you will be presented with the following error message: “User needs to update to the latest version of FaceTime.”

During the one and a half hour keynote, Apple CEO, Steve Jobs presented the audience with an OSX 10.7 Lion sneak peak, as well as the Mac App Store. In addition FaceTime Beta for OSX, an updated iLife ’11, and an all new MacBook Air are available as of today.

Steve Jobs, didn’t mention one very interesting detail, however; the ‘Software Reinstall Drive’ that is detailed on the Air’s tech spec section. The ‘Software Reinstall Drive’ looks like a very thin, and apple-styled, USB drive that comes loaded with OSX to easily reinstall the operating system on the new machine which no longer includes an optical drive.

Previously, Apple asked customers to either purchase an external DVD drive or install software via “drive sharing” from another machine. With App Store for Mac and ‘Software Reinstall Drive’ it looks as if the last days of boxed software seem to be numbered, however.

The WordPress App for iOS has never been a winner. Just read the reviews. For everything it lacks, it does have one important feature that the authors of this blog use frequently: uploading photos. Here is how I use it (quoted from this earlier article):

“I used the previously mentioned crappy WordPress app to make a draft post, and attached the images I wanted to that draft. The pictures got uploaded to my site, and I was then able to go back to Safari and select them from the “Media Gallery” and insert them.”

This image uploading feature was broken in an update earlier this month. Any attempt to upload a picture and resize it would result in a 640×480 image, most likely in the wrong aspect ratio. The only fix was to disable image resizing in the app’s never mentioned settings, which was annoyingly hidden in the separate Settings app on the iOS device.

The app was updated today to fix this bug, so those of you who rely on it’s uploading to post images on the go can feel free to resume blogging from Starbucks.

The Chronic Dev Team just announced the release of their iOS 4.1 jailbreak labeled ‘greenpois0n’. The jailbreak uses the same exploit which was exposed by iPhone Hacker Geohot a few days ago but promises greater stability.

‘Greenpois0n’ works on firmware 4.1 only, so if you care about preserving your iPhone 4 baseband (to unlock) it is strongly recommended that you use TinyUmbrella to upgrade your firmware in order to preserve the original iPhone 4 baseband.

Currently ‘greenpois0n’ is only available for windows but @p0sixninja promises that a mac version will follow as soon as some technical issues have been overcome.

According to the release notes, the initial release will support the following devices:

- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3G S
- iPod touch (4th Generation)
- iPod touch (3rd Generation)
- iPad

The team promises that another release will follow soon, adding the 2nd generation Apple TV as well as the 2nd Generation iPod Touch to the list of jailbreakable devices. You can download the jailbreak at http://www.greenpois0n.com/.

We will update this story as it develops.

Shortly after the announcement iPhone Hacker Geohot returned to the jaibreaking scene with a vengeance, however, stating that he will release his own jailbreak labeled ‘LimeRa1n’ the following day.

It was quickly confirmed that Geohot’s jailbreak would use a different bootrom exploit from the Chronic Dev Team, hence exposing two exploits to Apple at the same time, possible narrowing down future jailbreaking efforts for the next generation of iDevices. Bootrom exploits are harder for Apple to patch than userland exploits, generally requiring updated hardware, hence “burning” two at nearly the same time may hurt the jailbreak community in the long run.

After Geohot’s announcement the Chronic Dev Team desperately tried to convince the independent iPhone hacker to postpone his release until after the next generation of iDevices is released in order to save the exploit for future use. Geohot, however, decided to do the exact opposite and posted ‘LimeRa1n’ one day before the scheduled ‘GreenPois0n’ release.

‘LimeRa1n’ will work on iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.0, 4.1 and beyond. The jailbreak currently does not work on iPhone 3GS with new bootrom and is only available on windows for the time being.

You can download ‘LimeRa1n’ at http://limera1n.com/

We strongly recommend against using ‘LimeRa1n’ at the moment as Geohot is known for buggy version 1.0 software which is updated frequently during the following hours and days.

In addition, Chronic Dev Team seems to be taking the high road by saving their own exploit for the next generation of iDevices and is planning to incorporate Geohot’s exploit into ‘GreenPois0n’ instead.

If you don’t need to jailbreak right away, we strongly recommend for you to wait a few days until the dust settles and you can choose the safest method to jailbreak your device.

We will update this story as it develops.

This means that the jailbreak community may soon be able to offer us tools, as they currently do for other iOS devices, to save SHSH blobs, jailbreak the Apple TV, and install 3rd party software.
The hunt for Apple TV’s DFU mode has already begun and we will keep you updated as the story continues to break.

PS: If you’d like to try this on your own, make sure neither power or HDMI cables are connected to your Apple TV when you connect it to your computer, or the device will not show up in iTunes in recovery mode.

As noted by Macrumors.com Apple today pushed out the first beta of iOS 4.2 to the developers. iOS 4.2 will be released to the public in November with announced features such as AirPrint (wireless printing), AirPlay (wireless media streaming), as well as Multitasking and Folder support for the iPad.

In addition, MacRumors posted the following screenshot which illustrates that screen orientation locking on the iPad is now accomplished within the multitasking tray instead of the dedicated switch on the side of the device (which defaults to mute the iPad with iOS 4.2).

What we found most interesting about this screenshot, however, is the inclusion of what seems to be a system wide, easy to access, brightness control on the left side of the multitasking tray. This feature will be much appreciated by many users who use the iPad under changing light conditions such as reading a book before going to bed and reading the news in the morning.

If you can’t wait until november to quickly change the brightness on your iPad and enjoy all the other great features of iOS 4.2, you can register as an iOS developer now or wait until iOS 4.2 hits the torrents.

As usual, iFixit has a great teardown of Apple’s 4th generation iPod Shuffle. Everything is packed extremely tightly which apparently made it pretty tough for the company to open up the little guy below.

What I find most interesting about this teardwon, however, is how much space the low-capacity battery (with a listed capacity of just 0.19 Whr) actually takes up inside of the Shuffle.

The entire bottom half of the device is taken up by the battery. How much further do you think Apple can take the current trend of shrinking their previous designs (either in height, width, or thinness) with our current battery technology?

Think about it for a moment. So far Apple has been able to continuously slim down their iPhone/iPod product lines by taking advantage of efficiency improvements with motherboards, communication, storage, and processor technology. Batteries, on the other hand, are still huge. The only reason Apple has been able to shrink the battery for some of their devices is largely due to power-efficiency improvements of other components. Not battery technology improvements.

To improve the running time of the iPhone 4, for example, Apple not only used the power efficient A4 processor, they also build in a physically LARGER battery than for the 3GS.

And while the battery may not have been the limiting factor for most of Apple’s designs in the last couple of years — as the “transistor” technology of the other components combined was usually still larger in comparison — one just needs to look at the teardown photos of the new iPod Shuffle to spot that this may no longer be the case.

No matter how much smaller motherboard, CPU, or storage technology will become in the next couple of years, it may no longer have an impact on Apple’s design decisions. At this point a radical breakthrough in battery technology permitting more watts per hour, at physically smaller designs, may be what Apple requires most to be able to continue to wow us with future generations of slim and sexy iGadget designs.

Ultralife Batteries has an interesting post about the reasons why current battery technology can’t seem to keep up with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore" s_law" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Moore’s law, in case you’re curious to find out more.

While iPhone and iPod touch users have already been able to upgrade to iOS 4 since June of this year, iPad users will have to wait until November to enjoy the 100+ new features.

iOS 4 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. And soon iPad owners will get to enjoy its 100+ new features and innovations — including multitasking, folders, printing, and more. Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Key additions — beyond playing catch up with iPhone and iPod touch — will include wireless printing, as well as the new AirPlay wireless media streaming feature which allows users to switch a playing movie from their iPad to the new Apple TV on the fly, for example. Both iPhone and iPod touch will also be able to upgrade to iOS 4.2 come November.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs first demoed the iOS 4.2 key features during Wednesday’s media event in San Francisco.
