i have to say this is a truly sub-par update, philipp.
i come to this website for enlightening specifics..not cute, congratulatory posts.
what you guys need is a legitimate “applepress iPhone experience” article uploaded, pronto.
rip that phone apart or rave about the specs. i want details!
I have to post a rave it seems.
First point, acquisition and activation : Lined up for 2.5 hours on Friday afternoon at ATT store in San Antonio. Got in around 6:05, left at 6:12 with 8Gb phone and a silicone sleeve. Home about 20 mins away … hooked up to Quad G5, activated in less than 5 mins (transferred exixting number and plan, took out extra $20 data add-on) made first phone call on iPhone at 7:15, one and a quarter hours after nation release. Now I know that this is the opposite experience to many hundreds of people over the weeked, so I feel good that the process worked as promised for me.
Guess I got in before the Manhattan folk got home and the tsunami of activations started to roll from the west coast …. 500,000 phones moved on Friday and Saturday!!! … something was bound to fail in the support chain somewhere … no excuse, just the real world.
Second Point: This device has to be experienced to appreciate the elegance and simplicity of the touch interface. It is one smart little piece of technology and one that is slimmer and smaller than the visual impression you get from the ads. The interface just forces intuitive use on the most timid user. Watched a lady over the weekend .. who can barely operate a microwave … pick up my iPhone, play with it for a bit, call a friend, watch a U-Tube movie, listen to a couple of tracks and send an email to another friend … all with no user manual… and virtually no help from me, other than the ‘touch there’, ’swipe your finger’ help.
Third Point: Is it the best phone on the face of the earth? No I don’t think so, but that’s not what I thought I was buying. I didn’t set out to buy a phone. I was looking to get the functions that are important to me put together in one device in a manner that I could use them and enjoy them. I think I now have that … and am confident that updates will extend features and improve existing performance.
Fourth Point = 3G vs Wi-Fi/EDGE: I am not a road warrior and was seemingly able to find lots of wi-fi hot spots all over the place when I needed them for my Powerbook. So it seems with the iPhone. At home, I have access to my own wi-fi network (and about 4 unsecured neighborhood ones). On a trip, I only stay at hotels that provide wi-fi. In between, I will used EDGE when I need to. Tested it out in San Antonio over the weekend from different parts around town. Yes, it is slower, but excuse me, nowhere near as slow as the detractors would like people to believe. Once again, it may be a case of ‘your mileage may vary’, depending on tower locations etc. I had to check some Southwest Airlines arrival times with EDGE … 3 seconds to get on, past the landing page and to the ‘Input your departure/arrivak city’ form. Click that and the flick scroll list of City names comes up, hit submit and the answer page was there in about 2-3 seconds. Now I don’t know about you, but to me that is perfectly acceptable performance sitting in a pick up truck in a carpark at the airport.
Summary: Is it perfect? No, nothing ever is. Is it an ‘over-hyped’ $600 piece of fashion-boy trinketry? For some it might be … me, I’m 64 years old, have no need for bling boxes, and like devices that synch easily with my computing platform of choice, combine several functions, and make it easy to utilize those functions …iPhone does this in the most elegant package available on the market today. Let’s now wait and see how soon others rush to emulate these features.
After all, what ‘phone’ manufacturer wouldn’t want to sell several hundred thousand in a couple of days .. not to mention the service add-ons….
I understand the reasons behind the sub-par updates; You’ve been busy playing with your phone all weekend. Why would you bother with a website or blog? This site was just a way for Steve and Phil to deal with the wait/ anticipation for the iPhone. No need for it now. RIP applepress haha
Where the fuck are my updates?
